Chitting
« on: January 27, 2013, 15:32 »
Just got a load of spuds to start chitting.

Will they get too leggy on window sill - the whole of my flat is heated 24/7 between 16-18 degrees so although the windows will be cooler is this too warm?

I have a garage with window but its pretty damp and cold in there

Cooler and light is better, so I might favour the garage in your situation, if there is no way you can make an area indoors a bit cooler even for a while. If you can put them in egg boxes, one per compartment, this is a good way to support them while they are chitting as it allows air movement around them.

That`s the temperature that mine are at in a bedroom, so I will have to say they will be fine, but others may disagree.

Mine certainly do not develope leggy chits in two months of chitting in this enviroment.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I have to keep my flat at quite a stable temperature as I have pygmy hedgehogs and even though they have additional heat sources any sudden changes could encourage them to hibernate. They live in the spare room other wise this would be an ideal place.

Think I'll see how they go for 2 weeks indoors and if they look a little advance I'll wean them into the garage. I wouldn't be surprised if we get another cold spell.

Normally I buy whatevers left on the shelves in March which have already chitted in store and I grow them. This year I wanted to try greater variety.

I've got 2 1st Pentland Javelin & Premier, 3 2nds Shetland Black, Kestrel & Charlotte, and 4 Mains King Edward, Desire, Sarpo Mira & Pink Fir Apple.

I'm not sure what to do with the pink fir apples come to think of it there a very late main if I remember rightly. Is this because they need the heat and should be planted out later in the year or they just take forever to mature? Should I  just chit them and plant with the others?

Mine's probably about the same, but it's north facing so doesn't get too much light or additional warmth from the sun - if yours is more south facing they might shrivel at bit more than they otherwise would, but as long as the chits are relatively short and strong they should still be OK.

All the spuds can be chitted and planted together - maincrops just take longer than early varieties to grow to maturity.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

thats a good point I hadnt thought about which way the windows face. lounge is south facing but faces a huge bank of a garden so wont get any direct sun for a few months I should think (I've not been here a year yet) will keep an eye on it.
