hi everyone,i am a new allotment holder,last year was my first attempt at growing food,my potatoes had a lot of slug damage,so,would it be ok to throw a few slug pellets into the trench when i plant my tubers,or would they contaminate the crop.

No, they would be safe. But you can get organic slug pellets these days too if you're worried.

Some variaties suffer worse from slug damage, so try different variaties and see what works for you.

I would put some on top too, as they can do quite a bit of damage to the foliage if left uncheked.

a good dowsing of chimney soot works wonders for slug prevention i find

slug pellets will be fine or soot when planting but dont use fresh soot let it mellow out for at least a year before use

wet weather and newly cleared ground does not help as slugs tend to lay eggs more in grass areas than clear soil.
some potatoes are better than others when it comes to slugs, look online as well as seed catalogues.
