Eelworms
« on: January 06, 2013, 19:23 »
Hi there all,

I went down to my patch today and picked a great leek thinking of leak and potato soup for dinner.

When i cut the leek it had a eelworm in it and it was rotten.

Can anyone suggest how i deal with eelworms as they also attacked my potato's too.

thanks

Are you sure it's eelworm? Potato eelworms are microscopic.

Could this be leek moth? What part of the country do you live in? Having it in your profile would help us.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

maybe its not.

Its like a worm but with lots and lots of little legs and they move really fast.

When i have dug the soil you can sometimes see them.

Im in Horsham, Wesgt Sussex.

Not leek moth, then, although you're in the right part of the country for it.

Could be wireworm.

I reckon its two different pests but pics are always useful!

In the potatoes its probably wireworm (a beetle larva with 6 legs - not very fast) whilst in the rotten leeks its prob a similary coloured millipede (loadsalegs - and come in many shapes and sizes). The millipede is generally feeding on detritus so it may by feasting on rotten leek that's come about due to a fungal rot due to wet weather.

Leek moth larvae dont move very fast and the leek leaves would have had holes in earlier in the season.

Im just going to throw this one in there, lots and lots of legs and moves fast, sounds like a centerpied but a pic would be good.
