Annen, in response to your query, I have  2 sets of four beds , each of which is rotated round itself  over four years, and one set of five beds whcih has its own five year rotation, as it includes squash & sweetcorn.

There are lots of models of rotation, and  if rotating your whole plot in thirds every three years works for you, then don't change it if there is no need to  :D

Your way would work better for me as up to now I've not had any systematic approach and the old "Dig for Victory" method just doesn't with a haphazard person as me.  I'm not good at forward planning and breaking it down to smaller rotations looks easier to manage.

On a small plot - as long as you don't plant the same thing, in exactly the same place as it was last year, I'm sure it really doesn't matter what follows what  :nowink:

That's the way I've been working so far, but I keep having this feeling that I should be more methodical about it.  ;)

I do the same it's easier  to plan and I don't grow potatoes so i'm missing one group anyway.

I just wish I could stop myself from cramming everything in too close together :)

True rotation relies on ground being able to rid itself of the pests which like the same veg each year, and the diseases which like to see the same stuff where they can survive.

It also relies on using ground where a new veg won't suffer from an excess - say - too much manure, like carrots might/will, so as long as these basic rules are followed reasonably well, then the ability to be flexible, and pop in those cabbages that someone gives you when you didn't budget for them, is an easy one when you lots of different beds.

I think if I was gardening in rows now, I wouldn't be able to do that, and it was the idea of 'individual bed' gardening that I learned from many friends here!

That's really why I'm not cutting my throat about worrying about getting the plan changed within 16 hours of starting it!
