can you store unused garlic bulbs till next year
« on: December 08, 2012, 20:45 »
After planting my garlic i'm still left with 2 bulbs. If i put them in a cool, dark place can I plant them next year?  I have no more space to plant them and no one interested in taking them.

They might keep till spring but I think they might start sprouting after that.  Can you not just eat them?

If they're bought seed garlic they might have been treated with fungicide, so I wouldn't eat them.

Can't you find some pots/planters/tubs to put them in? They'll still produce a crop.

That's what I would do - bung 'em in pots and see what comes up.  They may beat the one's in the ground !

Cheers,   Tony.

Foolishly I planted a short row of elephant garlic from bulbs that have been hanging in my shed for two years. If they grow I will be more than surprised - if they don't at least I've put something back into the soil!!

Stick yours in pots Miss Penny or pass them on. They, like mine are bound to do, will fail if kept another year.

If by next year you mean this coming spring then I don't see why not. If you mean to keep to plant next autumn, then probably not. You might be best off doing as already suggested and pop them into some pots, or in the greenhouse border.

well yes and no - yes, they'll grow but the resulting bulbs from the late planted cloves haven't split so you end up with single cloved bulbs not much bigger than when you planted them)

The "pot them up now idea" is fine   - that's what I'll be doing as I too ran out of bed space on the plot and still have a couple of bulbs to plant.

There are spring and autumn planting varieties of garlic bulbs.

So, planting an autumn variety in spring may mean that it does not thrive or grow as planned, because it has not had its full cultivation requirements over the right length of time.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
