Over Winter Onions & galic

Hi All

Just need pointing in the right direction. ;)

New alloment plot this year, not been grown on before,

Question is;just prepared a bed to plant onion sets,and garlic.

 should i use a general fertiliser before planting ?

should i cover with a cloche etc;?

any advice would be much apprieceated :blink:

I wouldn't add any fertiliser until spring as IMO you don't want to encourage growth much when the weather is cold. They don't need covering as overwintering onions/garlic are bred to be winter hardy :)

I don't fertilise until spring either. The sets don't do a lot over winter and all the nutrients can wash out with the winter weather.

Don't grow too many winter onions, they are not good storers and are really a stop-gap until the spring planted one are ready.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
