to insulate or not?
« on: November 13, 2012, 19:52 »
i have an eglu cube for my girls (5 bantams) and have seen teh up coming long range forecast which suggests its going to drop to -10 or there abouts by the end of november. will the cube be warm enough on its own or do i need to add extra insulation?  the insulated cover on the eglu site says you need a run as well (presumably for attachment purposes) but i have a free standing cube so that then rules that out.  chicks are about 6 - 8 months old and have just started laying (sooo proud!!).

hens have their own feather duvet - they will be fine.
I have had several hens sleeping in trees through winters and never had a problem.
Staffies are softer than you think.

They'll huddle together in the coop as well for extra warmth.

The Eglu classic and cube are just fine. They have been well made and designed so don't mess with them. You don't want your girls to get too hot. Hens heat up no end overnight as they huddle together. You can feel the radiant heat when you open them up in the mornings  :)

You birds should always be toasty in the morning. If any of your birds are cold then there is a problem with it, which is something to look out for. Always watch your birds first thing to make sure they all are ok and that they get out of bed  :)

Ventilation is the key and should be fine in an Eglu. WE have had no problems at 18 degrees the last couple of winters. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
