New pullets ignoring mixed corn!!
« on: June 11, 2015, 13:56 »
Four birds from a breeder I have bought from for years, variety I have kept before.20 weeks old on Monday last, three are in lay and all appear healthy and active.

All four exhibit no interest in corn scattered before them or set in a dish. Mixed corn is fine and taken readily by wild birds in the garden. Hens have good appetite for layers pellets but zero interest in corn.

Never known this in 30yrs of poultry keeping. Sprinkle of corn is essential tool in poultry movement control :)

Any ideas folks?

Bill

They will be fine just on layers.   Corn is just a treat which they are probably not used to.

My three were like that for about 4 months, then they got the taste for it. 8)

I put this down to all the bugs, ants, weeds and grass we had.  :(

We don't have much of any of the above now. :D
rip Sandy, rip Beryl, Henrietta

Know what would be nice in your garden, a few hens lol

I have had this with new birds. Usually because they have not seen it before and possibly because there is a lot to take in when somewhere new. They will start to take it. Suggest a mere sprinkling until they get the idea.  :D
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Thanks everyone, will wait and see how they develop. I only use corn to encourage them to move from one run to another etc.

Yes, treat it as "buns"  :D   only required as bait to lure them where you want them.  Layers is what they need, plus what they can scrat. They will do a lovely job on your lawn weeds and are great moss removers.
