Urrrgghhh Really upset/annoyed angry- Rant
« on: October 31, 2012, 11:43 »
Hi I have recently got 4 new girls from a breeder that was supposed to have a very good reputation I visited them about 9 months ago and was impressed. I had the delivered as they are far away and offer this service and had a good selection of breeds that were all vaxed.

I only found good reviews about them, well my 16 week white star old has either impacted croup/sour croup -she stinks so must have had it before she arrived she also has a cold,  the black rock looks hunched and the arancunas look ok thankgod. They are isolated from the others so that is one good thing.

They were also supposed to pick up my cochin cock and swap her with a lady - this failed to happen a mix up apparently.

So now I am awaiting a visit from the Farm vet- who my lovely vets have told me will come out and see the chickens and is supposed to be excellent, I am hoping he does not cost the earth and can look at all my chickens as I want to give them as less stress as possible and have the best chance of knowing what I am dealing with now. .

I shall then forward a copy of the bill to this so called breeder and hope to get my money back -(if i don't then its a hard lesson learned but hopefully will have nursed any sick ones back to health.)

Lesson learned - I will from now on be a lot more selective about where i get chickens from but still so upset - Rant over.

Well my day has got a bit better- My new vet is wonderful, the chicken does not have impacted crop/sour crop but does have resp symptoms and is very thin, so he has given me a massive tub of Tylan and I only need 0,5g per litre so will have some to keep.

He also took blood from my older girls and is going to test for everything (I lost 2 chickens with very non-specific symptoms). He is a poultry game /bird farm vet and mainly deals with large flocks but was happy to come and see my girls at home.

Suddenly I have someone who knows what they are doing and can treat them properly rather than just guessing and giving Batril .

 :D :D :D :D

you need to be very careful with the respiratory infection - just in case it is mycoplasma which is bought on by stress (going to a new home is very stressful). Once a bird has it then they have it for life and it can rear up again during other stressful times such as moulting etc.
It is a good job that you heeded the advice and kept the new ones separate.
I do hope the breeder will sort out your payment and also swap the cockerel.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks, he has taken some blood from my old girls one of who gets cols symptoms and wheezy at times so I am hoping if that  if it is that I can get the younger ones tested to.

None have ever had the bubbly eyes though.

He was concerned about IB QX stain that he has seen in some flocks round this area of late.

With mycoplasma can hens live happily if you don't breed from them and don't add any to flock?

He will also do a PM if I loose anymore.

Its a large breeder - so I am hoping they will too.

I have had one hen that came to me with myco - none of the others caught it and she never had another bout of it for the rest of her life. I did introduce new hens without a problem. You just have to keep an eye on her.
