Ironman calabrese
« on: October 29, 2012, 22:08 »
Hi

It's the first time I've grown broccoli of any sort so I went for ironman, I had really good results early in the year, big heads, quite a few side shoots and then resprouting a main head from lower side shoots and then more side shoots. I couldn't recommend them more highly.

After clearing my peas in August I started some more off in pots and planted them out even though it was against what it said on the packet and planted them out. They are now just producing heads.

Is it worth leaving them to face the bad weather or should I just harvest now? And if left to face the elements what will happen to them?

I shall definitely be growing these next year :)

Fothergill's say they will crop into November so they should be ok until reallycold weather strikes. They won't stand through the worst!

That's good news, I'm off to Germany for three weeks with work at the end of November so maybe they will be my farewell feast! Hopefully!

I wonder if you could extend the season a bit by covering in Enviromesh. At least it will keep the pigeons and peskies off til you get back  :)

Not sure about enviromesh, I assume its similar to fleece? Not much of a problem with pigeons as my beds are in front of a wall (south facing) I just get attacked by catapilars and I think they have had their fill! I could try covering them before I go.

I'm off to find some enviromesh  :)

You could try Veggiemesh also Elmarto, may be cheaper... :)

I shall have a look at the garden centre over the weekend and see what they stock and more importantly how much it is!  :)

Thanks for the advice!
