Manure weight
« on: October 27, 2012, 19:26 »
Hi everyone, can anyone tell me what 2.5 cubic metres of manure is in tons.  I am trying to work out how much to order for our allotment. Thank you

How much it weighs, depends on how wet/dry it is.................

I may be a bit off but your general old'ish manure fairly dry like composted will be

Cow  about 550 kg per cubic mt.
Horse about 450 kg per cubic mt.

a bit on the wettish side will be about 30% heavier..

So your 2.5 cu mt will be about

cow 1.4 tonne or 1.8 wettish
horse 1.15 tonne or 1.5 wettish

I would have thought they would deliver in tonnes so i'd use an average of about 600 kg per cu mt.. cant go much wrong with that as it's probable wettish that you will get.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Sorry i found a problem with my calcualtions... it is a bit heavier than originally done above

This is for general manure as supplied.

Cow  about 950 kg per cubic mt.
Horse about 750 kg per cubic mt.

(Sorry - I used the wrong conversion rate from lbs to kg's.... me was an idiot!!)

It's flaming heavy so just order the one trailer load. Bear in mind you have to shift it so don't go overboard. It is extremely heavy and shifting it will be no picnic.  One year I had such a bad back that I couldn't raise the forkful so I just stood on the heap and chucked it onto my plot and planted the spuds where it fell  :nowink:    This year I have ordered half a load  :)  We can only get full loads but my plot neighbour is having the other half

if you're very lucky, you might get stuff like we did last year - shed clearings that were almost dry. Lifted in big plates and easy on the back, but some of them are only getting soft now after 18months in the rain!
