Help parsnip advice!
« on: October 21, 2012, 13:41 »
Hi folks can anyone help me please? This is my first year growing veg and having an allotment. Iv grown parsnips and when I harvest a few this weekend they were soft with some brown pathes and another had forked.

Can anyone tell me what it is and what iv done wrong please. We have been able to use some of it but the rest had to be thrown away due to being bad. I have not pulled all of them up and wonder if I need to.

It's possible that carrot root fly has got into them which can let in rot and canker.

Forking is often caused by obstructions in the soil, such as stones and lumps of manure.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just cut away 'the bad bits', cook and eat.

Grow them in well-sieved compost in containers. I snapped the root of this one getting it out but it still weighed well over one and a half pounds. Not bad for a flower bucket with the bottom cut out.
