A wondrous thing
« on: October 20, 2012, 17:37 »
I have managed to grow a cauliflower successfully.   It is a reasonable size, of good colour and not chewed by pests and not bolted.  It is the Snowball variety.  I have 2 more that are a bit smaller still to come.

This is a landmark.  I have had lots of attempts at cauliflower in the past and they have all ended in disaster, so I must be improving.   :)

A few years back I grew 6 huge, perfectly shaped caulis, can't remember the variety. I'd chucked them in a horrible spare bed that was awful soil, never got fed or watered. Sadly, when I cut them open, every one of them was infested with tiny caterpillars inside the curds. Every attempt I've made at caulis since then has resulted in tiny heads that instantly bolted, despite being fed, watered, weeded and netted. I'm beginning to wonder if they prefer a bit of rough treatment.

Can you really get away with sowing caulis as late as this?

They were a 50p sale packet and it says you can sow up to mid October to overwinter for picking early next summer.  I am to caulies what JayG is to cucumbers so we shall see  ;)

I've been meaning to try Snowball caulis. I was worried they'd be too small but they look really nice. I'll have to give them a go next year.

Nice caulis   :D

The one on the right was a couple of days off bolting, you can see it starting to go, but I caught it just in time. I cover them over with the leaves which helps.
