Peat compost etc etc?
« on: October 26, 2012, 11:03 »
Hi All,
Sorry for sounding dumb or lazy i dont mean to be  but at the moment i am using straw/sawdust for my chucks but when cleaning out the stuff seems to fly everywhere what a mess this stuff makes  :( Anyway my thinking is could i use DRY peat or compost or similar organic product for bedding as the poo is good for my garden when weathered of course :) If this would be good for bedding or similar i cannot think of a better way of incorporating the stuff into my soil and cut down on the mess of sawdust or straw any advice very much appreciated  ;)

I have heard of people using a mixture of compost and sand for quail.  It may stick to the hens feet when it gets damp though.

Best not to use sawdust as it can cause breathing difficulties for the hens.  Use dust extracted shavings or one of the horse beeding products.  These are usually hemp or rapeseed straw based.  I have found the finer chopped ones are a bit more expensive but have more in a bail.  The hen poo is easier to pick out of it daily and then you change it less often.  Some even have citronella or other fragrance in which deters flies.  Other members have said it composts down quicker than other products as well.   :)
