Layering Gooseberry
« on: October 09, 2012, 13:18 »
Earlier in the year I layered three branches down for new plants.
As they seem to have rooted well my question is
When do I remove them from the parent plant ?
Can I move them to there new position ready for next season ?
John

It mostly depends on how developed the new root system is. If it has lots of good roots, then you can cut it from the parent and move it now. Otherwise, let it wait until spring when you know it will be quite safe to move.

how about cutting the link to the parent so they get used to being on their own, then after a few weeks lifting them

to be honest, after shifting loads of self-layered goosegogs I don't think much stops them...

I've layered gooseberries and blackcurrants and do as savbo suggests, ie. cut the new plant from its parent around this time of year and then move it to its new home in spring. I suppose in theory the severing from the parent forces it to put down more roots of its own.
