Should they be laying?
« on: October 04, 2012, 19:11 »
Hello All,

I recently bought some new hens, the breeder said they were 18 weeks old and at p.o.l, I have had them for 5/6 weeks which would now make them 24ish weeks old. I have six hens (2 Sussex Star, 2 Speckledy, 2 White Star) one of the white stars is laying one egg a day, however the rest are not laying? am I doing something wrong? or is it just they might be late laying? any ideas?

getting slightly worried

Thanks

It is quite normal, they will lay when they are ready and not before!!   ::)  With the limited daylight now they might not lay until next year.  Fingers crossed that they will though.   :)

I have some pekin bantams about the same age and they haven't laid yet either, so am assuming they think its too cold now!  am hoping the silkies start soon though as am told they prefer to lay over winter rather than summer.  but they are pets for me rather than egg producers so not unduly bothered.

So there is hope for my Welsummer Bantams then, have lost count but they are around 24 weeks.  Looking forward to some dark brown eggs.   :)

My frist lot of hens (hybrids like yours) I got at point of lay around the end of September (about 16 weeks old) and they didn't start laying until the middle end of December, so must have been approaching 26 weeks old...  my speckledy was the last one to join in the laying game!

I got my Columbines at about 16 weeks and they must have both started laying at about 20/21 weeks old but they were bought in mid august so earlier in the year when there was more daylight!

It will be very exciting when each bird starts to lay!

H :)
