Plotting over time...
« on: October 01, 2012, 16:24 »
this is probably really obvious and loads of you may have done this already, but I spent a little time drawing out a time chart for a bed (over 6 years in my case) , what would follow what and when, and found it really useful seeing the gaps where things would be empty, and where I could play with rotation to fit something in and free up bedspace later on.... It made things much easier to imagine than the 1-year planting and harvesting chart (though I wouldn't be without that either)

anyone else have any other ways of visualising things so as to make the most of their plot?

Excel is the one we use, Savbo, and we're also just making up a list of the three headings, 'First definites', which are veg like leeks, peas beans etc, which are a must. 'Second definites' come next, which includes veg like salsify etc, and items not available for much of the year, or cannot be frozen, and 'Third definites', which is everything else. There's also a separate list for the fruit beds, which of course, don't get rotated!

Got the idea from Sarah Raven's book, and I hope the (used) copy we ordered from Amazon will arrive tomorrow... (There's another there for just a few pounds, and is much cheaper than the brand new version)!
