Need help. Can anything be done???
« on: November 20, 2007, 14:36 »
I've still got a few tomato plants in a heated greenhouse and added some sulphate of ammonia to the soil to try to lower the ph as for some reason the soil ph had climbed up to 9 and I've heard s of a is good for bringing it down but I think i severely overdid it! after only one day all the leaves totally dried out and just crumbled when touched. I took all the soil out the top of the pots which contained the stuff and added normal compost then watered.  The leaves are still the same.  Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to pull them back from the brink of death or are they done for??

                  Cheers.

IMHO, you'd be better switching off the heating to save money.  :D

Maybe you've done this before IW - I haven't?  How late into the year do tomato plants usually last (since I assume they are annuals)?

I reckon they've just got to the end of their life for this year, mine have done the same, I just pull the leaves off, cut off spent branches, and stop watering to get the last of the fruits to ripen.

I've probably got several kilos still on the plant turning red at a slower rate, but am still picking sufficient fresh toms and am chuffed for the time of the year.

I never did any PH testing, as I just assumed they would die off, as yours have done.

I normally clear mine by end of october, cant see the point in cost of heating. clear down greenhouse and fumigate it ready for next year. But thats me

Yep time to let them die, they will live a long life if you heat them. Some can reach lengths of up to 70' plus if kept warm well fed etc.

But at what cost ££££'ssssssss

True. I think they are perennials, but not here. Also environmentally unfriendly.

Winter salads: apple, pear, nuts, red and white cabbage, parsley, onion, garlic, carrot, etc.
