Tommy blight.
« on: September 07, 2012, 20:56 »
I've just pulled a couple of my outside toms off as they look as if they may have contracted the dreaded lurgi. My green house toms are fine, and the outside ones are just what I planted out rather than throw them away. I found a bit of general purpose (I think it's called sylthane) systemic fungicide, and I've given the leaves a quick spray with it. Will it be ok or have I had one of my famous triumphs again?

Afraid that blight has taken loads of prisonesr this year Reyt! Sounds like you're joining the club!

Try and get anythingturnong  brown onto a bag and destroy it asap, then watch over them day and night, as blight takes over as soon as you say 'knife', I'm afraid.

You can spray with Bordeaux Mixture, and I hope you're in time, as it only works as a preventative, not a cure.

I don't know about Sylthane, but it may work, and if you've got a load of it, then use it (although I'll probably get modded because it is probably on the EEC Stazi list by now - expect a screech of Brussels apparatchiks outside your door in about fifteen mnutes)...

If it's Systhane systemic fungicide from  Dow Agro Sciences :
Agrohttp://www.dowagro.com/uk/products/prod/Systhane20EW.htm
Quote
Systhane 20EW is a systemic fungicide for the control of APPLE SCAB, PEAR SCAB and POWDERY MILDEW in APPLES and PEARS,  AMERICAN GOOSEBERRY MILDEW in BLACKCURRANTS and GOOSEBERRIES, POWDERY MILDEW in STRAWBERRIES and POWDERY MILDEW, BLACKSPOT and RUST on OUTDOOR ORNAMENTAL PLANTS.

I can't see it saying you can use it on tomatoes  I wouldn't fancy eating them now

It can't hold a license for use on tomatoes, or it would say so on the safety data sheet, so would be illegal to use it on them.

That be the stuff. I only sprayed it on the leaves. I would imagine if you can use it on other fruits, it won't poison anything.

I would hazard a guess that as it doesn't mention blight in the list of nasties, that it's probably ineffective against it.

You need something like this:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
