Mistaken Identity !
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:20 »
The wyandotte bantam chicks that we hatched for my friend went to their new abode last week. All but one because it was a cockerel 11 weeks old.
Very handsome Blue Laced Wyandotte Bantam.

The deal i have with my Children is that we keep them until the dreaded crowing and then they are dispatched.

This morning as i was snoozing i heard a crow. I shot out of bed disorientated and a little bit surprised because it was a perfectly formed crow and until now there had been no sign of an attempted crow  or any sound at all really.

Keeping their side of the deal they said cheerio to him this morning and he was swiftly dispatched after they had left for school.

I've just been to water some houseplants that i've taken outside and heard crowing. Not just once but for 10 minutes, somewhere in the not too far distance.

This means that the crowing that woke me up was not our 11 week chick but someone else in the neighborhood has a recently acquired cockerel.

Honestly you could not make it up and far too late for resucitation.

Nobody around here has had a cockerel for 2-3 years.

Still, i think its nice to hear because a) its not mine and i wont be getting any hassle over it, b) because it is somewhere in the distance and c) i'm not living next door to it.

The one i dispatched earlier wasnt even a decent size so it will probably just end up for stock.

Sorry - just my odd sense of humour I suppose, and not at all amusing for your children (although I wouldn't tell them to be honest!)

No, i too found it quite amusing, thats what happens when you act on something when you are still half asleep.

When i heard it when i went to water the plants, i did momentarily have an awful feeling i hadnt finished the job off properly and half expected it to pop its head around the corner

I wont tell them i got it wrong, he was living on borrowed time anyway. My children are old enough to know whats what and are not too sentimental where the cockerels are concerned.

Intrigued now to find out where this new cockerel is living now. Just to be nosey of course, if only to stop the finger pointing in my direction.

I hope there was enough there for a good cockerel curry!
