Any one used ERYTHROCIN
« on: August 31, 2012, 15:29 »
Hi
My 3 year old Barnvelder didn't get off the roosting bar this morning, I noticed a while later that she was still there and when I went up to her I realised she was rattling when she breathed.
I brought her into the house and give her some food and water. which she wouldn't touch.
I phoned the vet and was asked lots of questions and they said they would leave out a prescription. The medicine is Erythrocin 16.5%, I expected Baytril or Tylan (not that I have used antibiotics before) Has anyone else used this? It says it "treats Chronic Respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma"
My hen is alert and has no bubbling in her eyes and is now eating and drinking a bit, does she have Mycoplasma?
I have shut up all my hens and they are also getting the medicine.

It's a good antibi for chest infections, of any kind, in animals and humans ;)

Thanks Mumofstig, but your answer does make me think, If its an antibiotic for humans as well
as chickens, why is there an egg withdrawal of 6 days? Not that my barnvelder is laying at the minute anyway as she is also moulting  ::) but my other hens are laying  :)

It's to stop humans getting a low dose of antibiotic in eggs so allowing resistant organism to build up in the humans eating the eggs.
