Hi Fatcat, is that the case even when small? I am not sure I can keep slugs and snails from eating them so small and tender. They are certainly hardened off enough. perhaps I could plant ot half and leave half in pots in case they get eaten! :)

Most plant's in the wild produce seed in the summer which germinates and over winter's perfectly well. You will be copying this. if you live in a high rainfall area add some grit or sharp sand to the planting hole to assist drainage. If there is a very cold spell forecast cover them with straw.

Yes, Fatcat, I think that makes good sense. Also, thinking about it, things seem to grow faster in the ground,so after a few weeks in warm soil they may be much bigger and stronger than they would have been left in pots. I will definitely give it a go :)
