Eglu perches
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:50 »
Hello
After months of daily poo picking its time for her to sleep on her perch and give me some time off.  She settles on her plastic eglu bars but there is always poo on them in the morning.  Should I just leave it to let it dry and fall off?  I'm so used to doing chamber maid service.

I'm thinking of easing the workload for my hen sitter as well here.
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

Some people use Hillfooters diatom slurry on the perches but I'm not sure if it would work on plastic.

Same problem Nerdle. I poo pick 2-3x a week and find that once it dries the chooks tend to kick it off perch into the tray.
Mine also will roost in the nest box in the winter. I think part of the problem is the roosting bars need to be slightly higher.

Leave it, some of it will come off when dry. I just give them a wash once a week and that seems ok.

Well - I can't seem to make this work.

She likes to rest in the same place every night and poo goes onto one of the bars.  I cut a section out of that bar to let poo fall through but she now shuffles over to a new bar to poo on that! I think she likes to rest her body on several bars rather that perch.

The poo mountian builds and it does dry out and would easily wash off each week I suppose.  It seems a bit smelly and less comfy for her after her spotless  nest box habit.

The grow bag plastic trays are ideal size for soaking the Eglu perches.

You could purchase a spare set so you always have clean, dry ones to hand.  You can get them in soak in hot, soapy water then and properly dried off  :)

I used a kitchen washing up brush to fettle mine with  :)

Thank you again.
I was hoping for poo to magically fall through the gaps but she has a good aim it seems.

A little vegetable oil on the perches may make it slip through the gaps or prevent it sticking to them.   ;)

I use a short fat stick (kept on top of the eglu) to scoop any poo off the rungs down onto the newspaper lined trays every morning when I let the chooks out. There's not usually that much so it only takes a minute but if the rungs are dirty the hens might step in it on the way to laying and it saves pooey eggs!

I think I've given up trying to do this.  My motive was to not poo pick daily but I'm resigned to doing it.

Basically she just poos on the plastic eglu grid and it doesn't dry out and fall off - its stays there.......

She will be so happy to get her nest box back.  I'll pile up the woodshavings in her 'poo zone' and invest in barbeque tongs to poo pick with.

Any more suggestions - a poopick free coop system for a hen who likes to rest her fat (spoilt to death) body at night?
