Harvesting spinach
« on: August 09, 2012, 13:21 »
Having only acquired my allotment in mid-May, I took what the garden centres had to offer in order to get something in.  One product I had never grown before was spinach.  This is now ready for harvesting but I am unsure which size leaves to take first.  Are the large ones the way to go, or do the medium/small ones taste better?  Welcome any thoughts.

Depends on what you want to do with them. I use the smaller ones in salad and the bigger ones in soup as my OH is quite partial to my spinach soup.

Spinach "Boils down to nowt"  so you need quite a large number of plants to feed a hungry family.   Why not try a few larger/older leaves and see how they taste?

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

spinach cooked with a fried onion and scrambled egg on toast is nice and mashed with fried onion potato and grated cheese too.
