Pot bound peppers - to re-pot?
« on: August 12, 2012, 14:51 »
This is my first year with an allotment, I'm growing peppers in the greenhouse from seed but only put them into 19cm pots as their final container.

The roots are growing out the bottom of the pots into the floor of the greenhouse and was wondering if anyone would risk re-potting them at this stage. They are flowering and producing fruits already, so is moving them necessary?

Thanks!

Michael.

I'd leave the roots to explore if they want to  :) and just water and feed as usual

I heard that they fruit more if the roots are restricted. Mine are in 6" pots and doing well.
I've just picked the first 6 chillies today.

I think that only applies to chilli peppers, my sweet pepppers grow bigger than bush tomatoes, so they'd struggle in small pots ;)

Yes, these are sweet peppers. The plant is quite condensed, probably because of the pot size. By that I mean the stems to the flowers is very short (on both varieties) and the forming fruits look like they will be stuck for space before long. Is this something to worry about?

My chilli pepper plant is in a smaller pot (14cm?) and has fruits all over it :-D

What happened to mine last year was a lot of fruit set when the plant was small. This stopped the plant growing bigger to produce any more :(

This year I only let a few of the first fruits grow, I pinched off the rest - the plants got much bigger and set a lot more fruit. You might like to try it on a few of yours.

Thanks for that, mum.
