kill off whole plant when spot blight?
« on: August 02, 2012, 23:40 »
I don't have many tomato plants, but found several blight dark vine on couple of them. there are lots of green fruits on them, I chopped off both of the plants. but wondering I might be wrong and should have just cut off the branches infected?

with tomatoes, I always try to save them by chopping bits off and keeping them very well ventilated.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't  :(

Study images of stem blight on tomatoes carefully - when I first grew Red Alert I went into a bit of a pruning frenzy when black streaks started appearing on some of the stems.

It appears to be a perfectly normal pigmentation with that variety, and possibly others too - black marks appearing on stems could of course actually be blight, but it tends to start in blobs rather than looking like long streaky dark patches, and you would also expect to see signs of blotches on leaves and affected fruit.

Be ready to panic, and be ready to prune to try to save the plant, but don't do either until you have ruled out something more benign.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I too try to save some of my toms if blighted.  I did actually have to rip out 4 outdoor tom plants, but another 4 I have just taken off the affected leaves, and 2 of them cut off blighted stem to try to save the trusses below which look okay.

thanks, I dont know what varieties I grew as I only got the seeds from tomatos bought from shops (because they taste good). and I regret I have put down four plants which had many green fruits on them.

The other thing is, if you have green fruits, you can pick them if they aren't blighted at all and put them in the dark somewhere with a ripe banana.  It helps them ripen! :)

Whilst taking off some leaves yesterday, I broke a fruit truss off.  I tied it to the top bar of the polytunnel to see if they will ripen, not having any bananas at the moment.

Very unusual to buy a tomato from a shop that actually taste good!!!   Mind you my friend buys hers from Aldi and she says they are good tasting.  We get ours from the Cash and Carry, and they taste quite nice, but not as good as home grown!

I bought a branded box called "the best", the box and the shape and the color of the tomatoes looks good and that makes the taste better...maybe?  :)

Never heard of them, but if they taste good, make the most of them!  :)

I sowed moneymaker toms for Brian as he said he doesn't like all my 'strange' varieties, and unfortunately they are the most prolific ones this year!   :(
