Main crop of onions
« on: July 19, 2012, 15:37 »
Anyone lifted theirs yet? What are they like? Reckon any will store at all? At least half of mine have white rot at the base and are now on the compost heap sandwiched between two deep layers of grass cuttings

Take them out of the compost heap as soon as possible - otherwise all you will do is spread white-rot around your plot!  - all plants that have white rot need to be burnt. (however if you catch the white-rot early on you can always pull and freeze your onions).

But to answer your question, no i havent pulled mine yet, as they are far too small, and the ground has been to wet - i will be pulling some of mine around the 1st of august, depending on whether the soil has dried out and what the forcast will be for that week!

Im affraid i dont think yours will store too well, but like i said above, just cut off the white rot off the onion and freeze them. ;)

I don't think I would have composted onions with white rot, even cooking between grass clippings.

A lot of my onions feel soft, especially with this rain, so I think they will be too moist to store but I only have about 30 white onions anyway - soon get through them.

My reds are still in the ground and seem to be doing better, necks just starting to go over.

I planted sets on top of a lasagne bed with mushroom compost and most of the rainwater has soaked through the bed so onions are not sitting in water.

Onions were not rooted in the soil underneath so I think that is why I avoid white rot as it is all over our allotment in the soils.

Not all rot on onions is white rot, so before you start fearing the worst, examine them closely.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

White rot is distinguished by little black spots on the white mouldy growth. Pulled mine a week ago and they were the best i have grown. Dibbed a hole for the set's and filled with sharp sand, worked a treat.

It's rot and it looks a bit like mildew at the base of the onion. I've seen it before in very wet conditions. I don't think it's a specific pathogen, just the sort of decay that develops on onions stored before properly dried

Alan, I'm not far from you and some of my shallots and onions were rotting in the ground so I've lifted them. The rotten ones will end up in landfill but the rest are currently drying in the greenhouse and will be inspected regularly to weed out the bad ones. Personally I never compost anything that has even a hint of disease on it.

Mine are ok but I observed a couple of plots where the tops are starting to collapse with what I presume is botritis.
