One of my new speckledy's has died at the first attempt to lay an egg. The egg was shell less and broke inside her. She seemed to be slower in maturing than the other two birds who have been laying for about 5 weeks. Has anyone else had this happen with new chooks?

Yes!  Last April, we'd only had ours one week and when our Hipswell Coucou tried to lay she prolapsed and got badly pecked by the others.  We didn't have a clue what was going on and it almost put me off keeping chickens altogether.

I noticed a few weeks ago that her back end didn't look quite right but it seemed to sort itself out. I had forgotten about that.

So sorry about your chook it is always distressing when one dies. Try not to be put off. It is an unfortunate fact that these things will happen from time to time when keeping any type of pets or livestock
