Chain saw sharpened.
« on: January 10, 2013, 19:37 »
I've just had a saw chain sharpened by a dealer and on getting home notice that the tips are blued -  ie made too hot.
Will it be any good or will it blunt straight away?.
Should I take it back . dealer is 15 miles away.

I would say that chain is ruined, if you use it then try to take it back they will say you have miss used it.

That's what happens when using the electrical chain-sharpening gadgets...
Contemplated buying such a tool until I saw one used on a chain... glowing red tips and then blue as the cooled...

No way! It ruins the chains!

I found a good book on the net from Oregon or Stihl on how to sharpen the chains - I do it by free hand now, quicker and easier. Takes a bit of learning though.

I clean my chain using an ultrasonic cleaner http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/hus-halsa-fritid/ovrigt/ultraljudsrengoring/ultrasonic-cleaner-cd-4800-p40491 and plan to test using a deep fryer, http://www.jula.se/fritos-3-l-2kw-802395 , to re-lubricate the cleaned chains.
