New Hen Not Laying
« on: July 12, 2012, 13:20 »
Hi Everyone,

We just topped up our flock three weeks ago.  Our hens are doing wonderfully and we have a fresh egg everyday from two of our new hens, but the third one is a puzzle.  She is a Caulder Ranger, layed three little ping pong ball sized eggs the first week we got her and nothing since.  She seems healthy, very sedate and serene.  But no longer crouches or has any interest in laying.  Any ideas?
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Chicken breast for dinner? Only joking ;)

How old is she? Are you certain it's the other two laying the eggs? Have you found any other thin shelled or broken eggs around... Not necessarily in the nest boxes? Do they free range and maybe she has found a best elsewhere? Perhaps in a hedge?

If she is young the onset of laying can be very stop start so I wouldn't worry too much for now.

We bought our hens POL.  I watch them like a hawk.  Her eggs were so distinctive because they are round little titchy things!  Her colours are so vibrant and rich and her body shape is that of a Bantam.  If she IS a Bantam, she's a good sized one.  I guess she's just gone off the lay for a while?

the majority of hens do not lay everyday - usually the most is 6 out of 7 so she could be laying  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

At POL age once they start to lay you can get a variety of shapes and sizes to start with whilst they are practicing ::)

Be patient and she will soon be laying :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
