early signs of a broody? (please let it be!)
« on: July 04, 2012, 14:07 »
my R.I.R girl had made a nest hidden under some logs and scrap wood with straw and softer twigs in our outbuilding (she usually lays in the nestbox with the others in the coop) the door was closed today she she was very aggitated so I let her in (I didnt know she had made one in there at that point) she ran straight up to the  site and layed another egg, there are 2 in there now. She was making crazy dinosaur noises , rosey and drilling and sat there after and pulled the eggs under her for a bit and fluffied up, she sat for 20 mins then left. Id it possible she is starting a clucth? or is this just general hen behaviour? she has never been a vocal girl so these noises were totally adorable. I am desperate to hatch some eggs this summer as I just failed recently after lots of effort and we are left feeling a wee bit glum

Sounds very broody to me.  Will the eggs be fertile?   :)

no weve no cockerel, but I have been rather hasty and ordered some Lavender Orp eggs  , they will be here in about 7 days, I was going to buy an incubator and do it that way, but maybe our girl will step up to the mark! is it normal for a broody to just lay until she is ready to settle? or would she normally start to incubate as soon as shes got 1 egg? her comb has changed from red to orange too :/  oh I shouldnt get excited but Id so much rather my girl (who recently survived a terrible fox attack) could get the chance of being a mam.  :)

You need to make sure she is properly broody and wont be getting off the eggs after a few days.
When your eggs arrive leave them to settle for 24 hours then slip them under her
Good luck  :)

She may carry on laying until she has enough eggs under her to sit on comfortably.

That is definitely broody behaviour, just hope she keeps it up for you!
