Smelly plant (possibly), but what is it?
« on: June 09, 2012, 14:02 »
Our neighbour implied that this plant pongs somewhat. It is putting up a long 'bud', has slightly variegated thick waxy leaves and at the moment it is about 3' high.
Will it have nice flowers or anything interesting? If it's just going to whiff we might dig it up!

It looks like a voodoo lily flower spike

They do smell of rotting meat, as this is how tha atttract flies for pollination.

They don't last long and are quite interesting, so iitm I'd leave it for now  :D

I should've said it came with the house, hence the neighbour has more of an opinion than we do as to wether it should stay or not!
I think we'll leave it for now and see what happens! :D

thanks

Mine only flowers when I dig up the bulb and leave it on a shelf.  After it has flowered I replant it.    Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

+1 for Voodoo Lily.

The smell is only bad if the bulb flowers indoors in a heated room.  I know from experience.  I was moving house over winter and left some of the bulbs in the dry in the factory stores.  We all thought something had died.  Outdoors they're not usually noticeable.

They're more reliable to get into flower if you lift and overwinter the dried bulb/corm(?) indoors.  But they're quite hardy outdoors.

A very interesting plant.  Keep it!

Here it is in full bloom, it unfurled overnight. Impressive and exotic-looking but smells like one of Grinling's rat kills gone maggotty, dropped over the back gate and discovered by me when painting rear of said fence. Advised Grinling to take neighbours advice and dig the blooming thing up!

I haven't smelt it and it can't be worse than the chook factory. It is staying put.

What a useful plant. One of those stuck a few yards away from the windows would distract the houseflies I bet!

I believe there is a tropical rainforest version but didn't realise there was one that would grow in our climate (especially this year's!)

wow I think it's lovely and it cant smell half as bad as the red top fly catchers we have at home, so if you do need to re-home it just give me a shout  ;). Off now to see where I can find some to buy  :)
