Parsnip germination
« on: June 28, 2012, 17:56 »
I sowed parsnip and radish to mark the rows in March. The germination of the parsnip was pants but the radish romped away and I got a good crop.
Clearing the bed of radish (very delicately) I could see I had a pretty poor showing of parsnip but decided to leave them in and the few growing started to toughen up from weedy specimens to healthy ones. Still only had about 20 but hey ho!
On today's inspection I found several new parsnip plants have emerged filling the gaps in the rows a bit! :D :D :D
I reckon that's 15 weeks for germination! Is this a record?

I found that parsnip seeds preferred warmer soil for germination so maybe that's why your late arrivals are leafing now. I think by late fall they'll be a surprising size for you.

I have also sown three rows and got just two plants,  however I have two strong rows from when I started them off on kitchen paper and put them in toilet roll holders and they are romping away.

I have put some more in paper and put in a plastic box to germinate and three are showing in just four days, I shall pick them up with tweezers and put into more toilet roll holders and plant them out when they have two true leaves, they may not be as big as the earlier ones I sowed but at least I will have a crop.  A lot of faffing about but I will not be sowing any outside again.

I stationed sowed parsnips in March - 3 seeds to each station - germination was slow - but in the end I got about 40% success rate. As usual they took ages to appear and all the weed seeds started to germinate as well  - so the bed looked a right mess for a time whilst I spent time on my hand and needs searching for germinating parsnips and trying to weed out the rest!. As a back up, I sowed parsnips in paper pots and used these to fill the gaps - than I germinated a few seeds on kitchen towel and filled in the last few gaps - a bit tedious I know - but I now have a complete bed of parsnips - some at different stages admitedly - but it looks as if the late sown ones will catch up. A sucessional sowing of sorts I guess - but as Parsnaip are in the ground for so long I don'tr suppose that counts for a lot - will have to wait and see what size Parsnips I get this winter.........
