I have a mottled Leghorn cockerel and my neighbour a white Leghorn and they are both quite gentle, but he did have one before that which was a complete psycho. I think it's just luck of the draw. Just get him used to you from day ! and hopefully you won't have any trouble - both the white and mottled leghorn were raised from chicks and the "psycho" one was brought in as an adult, so maybe raising from young is the way to go.

I had one I raised from our own eggs and despite the hens from the same brood being really friendly he became a complete madcock and had to go. It really is the luck of the draw. They can often be friendly until their first Spring!!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Well, we have had the chick for nearly a month now and yesterday we got the answer as to whether it was a hen or a cockerel  ;)

cockerel

Early yesterday when we went outside he bent his neck funny and let out what can only be described as a croak! He repeated this off and on a few times over the day, he even was on top of one of the Isa's  :nowink:

We did notice just the last couple of days that his wattles has got a bit bigger and he is now nearly as big a our Bantam leghorn, he likes to follow her around and last night was the first night he slept up beside her on the same roost bar as all the hens  :nowink:

He still runs away from our hen who is the lowest in the pecking order.

We now think he was dumped as a feed for Mr Fox.

Fingers crossed he settles well and doesn't get aggressive

it amazes me what lengths some people will go to, to get rid of unwanted things. I was recently on a website for poultry sales and rehoming and there was a chap who openly admitted he had let his male quail out in the wild because it was a male !!! Shame on him, didnt work though, much to his dismay the quail found its way back home.

im so glad you took him in and he is doing well. definately a lucky escape from where he has come from.

Which is actually illegal as it is illegal to release non-native species into the wild and japanese quail are unsurprisingly not native!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I know Kate and her Ducks , i tried to report the add but i could not find anywhere on the site to do it (typical, the website lets you post animals but doesnt seem to have any controls).
I went back on the next day and his add was gone but was replaced with a new add not mentioning the release.
Probably someone had contacted him and told him. He probably didnt know it was illegal but if he is breeding and doesnt want males, he should man up and cull them early on.
