Hello - some of my shallots are sending up flowers - is this a bad thing? Should I just cut the flowers off?

Also - when are shallots ready to be harvested, do you think?

Actually not sure.

I assume they were grown from a single large one.
As this one will have been a year old I suspect that it flowering could be normal(ish) or maybe not. Say this as it is in it's second year so flowering may be/would expected.
The shallots that grow round this main one should not be flowering as they are not in the second year.

If grown from seed they should not be flowering.

Never actually thought about this situation so could be utterly wrong, but I could expect the original central shallot to be flowering for the above reason.

Hi kajazzy, it is not uncommon for shallots (and onions) to send out flower stalks, especially when we have had a odd season (hot, then cold, then back to hot etc).

And yes you are correct they should be removed, as if you dont all of the shallots energy will go into the flower and not the shallot.

Shallots will be ready around August time, you will know when they are ready when the shallots have completely seperated from the cluster and the leafs go yellow and flop over.
