I grew Butternut Squash last year and plenty of fruit (?) set but most rotted on the plant. Is there any reason why I couldn't construct a frame and train them up it, Cucumber style?

Pretty sure this is possible. Round where I live, people plant pumpkin/squash plants near fences and they grow happily up them. I suppose if the fruit gets heavy, they may break the stem. Another solution: you could try placing some fruits on a wooden support, like a mini-palette or something like that. What about on some straw?

How far advanced were the squashes when they rotted?  Quite often if they don't get pollinated then they rot off, even though they look as though they've got going.

Thanks for posting this Parttimer. I'm going to try growing my Uchiki Kuri and Harlequin squash up a large trellis this year so will be interested in responses.

3-4 inches most of them!!
