French beans and mice

French beans and mice

Given the number of mice & voles on my plot I starting peas at home. Am I safe to sow french beans directly or should I germinate them at home as well?

From my personal experience, I'd recommend starting the beans at home. Mice seem to prefer the seeds rather than seedlings. The way I got around them was to plant the seeds in place and immediately cover the bean bed with some tangled old netting pegged in place. They didn't even bother to tunnel for the seeds when they saw that (thankfully!!)
