Celery brown about the gills
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:47 »
Help please, I planted one row of green celery and two rows of celeriac a month or so ago. They started off quite well but now seemed to have stopped growing and instead of being green about the gills they are brown about the gills. They have brown to light brownish patches. Could this be vermin or perhaps the non-stop rain?

A lot of veg in my garden has slowed right down due to the poor weather. My celery is still in cells in the coldframe and only 2 inches high.

I think they may have got to wet iof they are going brown, I have been waiting to for the better weather to put mine in the ground.

They may also have got cold: they don;t mind wet usually as they originated from bog plants

Mine are both still in their trays, hardened off in the garden, which is very sheltered, as it hasn't been good enough weather for them to go out in the ground at the exposed plot

If you have any sort of cloches, even soda bottles, put them over the plants to help minimize the moisture. They are a bog plant but even they can take only so much water.  My guess is that all your rain has probably also washed out some of the soil nutrition you added so when the weather improves, a bit of manure tea or such would help and once the heavy rain period ends, take off the cloches.
