Fox Attack Update
« on: May 27, 2012, 19:13 »
Four weeks ago our little bantam was attacked by a fox with severe injuries but thanks to the advice on this site I am pleased to say she is well on the way to a full recovery although with a limp.  However we are now having a problem reintroducing her we let them all out together during the day in the garden with a careful watch as we are having real problems with her being attacked again by one of the large sussex - This evening it jumped on her back and gave a really nasty peck - we have tried putting the injured chicken on one side of the fence and the others in the pen but this black chicken still tries to get to her and paces up and down and then goes at the bantam with her feet it is quite worrying to see.  Can anyone give any suggestions as to what to do for the best cannot put her back yet as she will be pecked to death by this one Hen and her wounds are still healing with good old Purple Spray.  Have tried anti pecking stuff but nothing works.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  JMF

I'm no expert but have you tried putting the Black 'Bully' at the other side of the fence or in a seperate run, or even a wire dog crate, but still in sight of the rest of the flock and see how your little Banty is then with the main flock free ranging in the garden.

This is good advice as when you re-introduce the bully she will be bottom of the flock. You may need to keep her seperate for couple of weeks. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi we had to put our silkie that was bullied by the larger hens in a different run - she was so badly pecked we had to take her to the vets.  Tried introducing her back and she was badly attacked again - practically squashing her.  So ours are separated now we have a rhode island red and a cream crested and two silkies separated.  We did have a silkie cockerel and he was killed by our other rhode island reds we had.  We rehomed them - we have only 4 now.  Unfortunately we have to keep ours in pens as otherwise the foxes would most definitely get them.

Word on the street on my allotment site was that a fox had been seen prowling around. Everyone locks their poultry away but it got hold of a hen on Saturday daytime, obviously it was very hungry.

The guy whos hen was taken shot it this morning so happy days, hope your bantam makes a full recovery.
