2 Broody Leghorns
« on: May 24, 2012, 08:12 »
2 of my girls have been broody for approx 2 weeks - I dont wont any chicks so all eggs removed straight away.  No sign of broody phase ending.  Yesterday I took both chooks out of nest box & put them in a large pet cage during the day with plenty water & food & returned them to hen house at about 8pm last night.  I have repeated the same thing this morning.    The problem if I leave them in the main run is that other girls lay eggs in the nest box that they sitting in - so they then have eggs to sit on albeit not for long as all eggs removed daily.  Do I just persevere taking them out of main run during the day or just leave them in main run - how long do they stay broody - advice would be great.

Stick with it, it took five days to break my broody. Is the cage raised on bricks to allow air circulation?
If your run is big enough and fox proofed you can put the cage within the run and leave them overnight.
It's very frustrating. Good luck.

the cage is on a brick but it has a plastic tray in the bottom as the wires are quite a long way apart.  Unfortuantely cage will not fit through gate of run - I shall just have to persevere & stick with it - thanks for support
