do i need to feed my leek seedlings
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:45 »
my leeks were planted early feb in deepish trays, and are growing well in my plastic green house, although they are not pencil thickness yet.  i was hoping to put them in after my first earlies come out, but as everything seems so slow this year , (my maincrop spuds are bigger then my earlies   anyway what i wondered was do they need a feed while in the trays, id hate them to starve to death while awaiting their permanent home.

any advice from you experienced folks appreciated, thanks

Having been that long in trays, the nutrients could well be depleted. I'd given them a drop of something.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

thanks dd, do you think they'd like tomorite, or similar, or blood fish bone?

Mine have never said no to Tomorite, they need a quick fix, bfb would be a slower release.

To be honest, I picked up some cheap liquid plant food from Tesc* and my stuff in trays/modules seem to be quite liking it.

I think liquid seaweed is good too, for everything in the garden, not just the veg

I like liquid seaweed too.  It boosted my runner beans very well last year.

Interesting points here, because my leeks are particularly uninspiring so far, although they'll reach the required size to plant out in about five weeks time.

Perhaps a bit of nettle tea would help, as they really need growth at this stage.

I'll try it and report back.

So does nettle tea Anne - they devoured it all!
