Rhubarb feed.
« on: May 21, 2012, 18:45 »
What can I give my rhubarb for a tonic?
Over the winter it had a dressing of manure, but some of the stalks are a bit thin and straggly.  Would a liquid application of comfrey or nettle tea help to thicken up the stalks?

Thanks in advance.

This sounds as though your crown is still quite young?   If this is so, I would just wait for them to thicken up over the forthcoming years.

If it is a well established crown - - apart from Oss muck in the autumn, I've not got a clue

Cheers,    Tony.

Yes, that's really annoying me about my rhubarb. It looks healthy enough, plenty of stems, but they're really thin. To get enough for a crumble, I have to pull loads of them. Can't remember what variety it is, but it's about 3 years old now. Do some varieties tend to have thicker stems than others?

Mine have two feeds over winter.

The first is a sprinkling of seaweed in dry form, this is done at the start of the winter when all has died down.

January is when I give it a good layer of rotten donkey cack.

I will only take so many stems of each plant and never take after the longest day.

I agree with Aidy - top picking after the June solstice. Some folk think that just because there's still stalks coming up that they can keep pulling. But it's at the expense of future growth and plant health. Every plant needs time to recover, including rhubarb and asparagus.
