Pinching out Dahlia seedlings
« on: May 16, 2012, 07:38 »
I have about 20 Dahlias in my kitchen, that go out to an unheated greenhouse during the day, but some are now getting a bit leggy. They all have good leaf growth and 2-3 levels of leaf growth so my question is can I/should I pinch out the top? Will that encourage a more bushy plant or cause more harm than good? And if pinching out is a good idea can I then plant the pinched out tops in teh hope of more plants?

I know lots of questions but if you don't ask you don't get to learn  :)

Cheers,

Shieldsy

You can pinch out the tops, but I doubt they would make viable cuttings.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine have been out in the unheated greenhouse for weeks and they're fine.  I think being in the house will make them too leggy. You can always fleece them on frosty nights if you're worried.

Pinch out the tops to make them bush out a bit.  If you're unsure just do several rather than the whole lot. I always do that if I'm not sure  :)
