Is she broody??
« on: May 09, 2012, 17:23 »
I asked advice recently on the forum because one of my chickens wouldn't lay in the nest box but insisted on laying inside the hutch.  We took all the floor covering out of the hutch but now she has taken to removing some straw from the nest box and making her own nest in the hutch, where she sits for most of the day.  Occasionally there is an egg there but mostly not.  The other two lay an egg a day.  Could she be broody?  I didn't think they got broody when they are only just starting to lay?  If so, how can I 'talk her out of it'?
Grateful for any advice.

Hi
Firstly, I'm not that experienced but what breed is she and how many eggs has she laid so far?
Also when you go to her in her nest does she puff up and squawk?  When she leaves her nest does she do a big smelly poo?  These things are a sure sign of broodiness.  :)

How long has she been laying for? She could be broody or if she has only started in the last couple of weeks she might be thinking about laying but not much happening, or keeping the others company when they lay.

They have been laying since first week of April, and are Black Rocks.  She doesn't seem bothered or squawk, and will come out when I put something interesting to eat into the run!  (Haven't noticed the poo!!)  Maybe she is just a 'slow layer'.
