our hens have a relatively large opentopped run but in the last month or so they've really starting scratching up the grass and parts of it are just bare earth (or would be if i took away the autumn leaves i put in for them to scrat about it)

our soil is sooo stony it would be hard to bash in the fencing posts to make another run for them so i had the brainwave (don't laugh) of sub-fencing parts of their run off so the grass could have a chance to recover.

i've blocked off two of the corners but because it's practically winter now the grass won't really grow that much in the coming months.

so this afternoon i dug up patches of grass from our gravel path and have transplanted them into the bare patches; hopefully a good proportion of them will catch. i've dug up daisies, plantain and dandelions on the path too, for a bit of variety.

i'm not sure how much of a success it will be but nothing ventured nothing gained!

Good luck Rose, what lucky chooks you have  :D

Are you going to cover some of the run to stop it becoming a mud bath over winter :?:

if it rains they go back into their little house or else they shelter by the shed door - it gets so windy here (southwesterly gales  ) that we'd end up losing anything that would act as a cover

county kerry, right by the seaside (far south west of ireland - you can't get much more westerly without hitting america)

it's lovely but we do get bad storms

Woooow... I've had a wonderful holiday in Kerry, it is sooo beautiful.  Wet and windy but absolutely beautiful.

We stopped off one day for a cuppa, by the sea almost at the end of the road into the sea.  It was a lean too shack on the side of a house in the middle of nowhere.  The weather was... "damp" the scenerery was out of this world.  The tea and cakes were ....   mmmmm

I'll swap you Kent for Kerry

Kent would be a lovely place if half the people disappeared.
