Plants to grow in a wall
« on: May 03, 2012, 19:59 »
My parent's garden has the remains of a dry stone dyke running through the middle of it where it used to be the border of a field. My mum had mentioned she'd like some plants to plant in to it which should work as it's quite tumbled down and there is some Snow in Summer that's colonised it already. It's her birthday on Sunday and as I'm terrible organised I was thinking I could get her some plants to plant into the wall. It is about 4ft wide so there is quite a lot of space to plant things, trying to find a picture of something similar on t'internet but struggling.

Just I'm not sure what exactly, I was thinking alpines because alpines are mountain plants so could just move some rocks around on the wall, bung in some compost and plant out the plants there. We're in the north east of Scotland so there hopefully  shouldn't be a huge problem with drying out although I imagine it will be quite free draining as the compost will be on top of a pile of stones. Any ideas on flowers? Otherwise I will use my tried and tested method of buying some plants and seeing what survives. :tongue2:

One idea to be going on with, perhaps?

Aubretia?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ivy leafed toadflax, lovely little wildflower that loves growing in walls.

You could try some alpine strawberries you would need to feed them but they should be ok .

I have an old stone wall at the front of my yard and I have creeping phloxes growing in it as well as snow in summer and various hens & chickens. They all love the dry conditions.

Thanks for the suggestions, went for some Aubretias as mum has mentioned she likes the one she already has, some Phlox, Campanula and Anthemis so hopefully they will work out. If they can survive the rain and/or hailstones we've had this week they should be alright.

And I've got some ideas for next year now as well. :D

Try a few 'Asplenium', they grow like weeds, but just take all you chuck at them, and they always seem to come back for more TLC...

Bit like dogs really...;0)
