Last year I grew "The Czar" which is another white flowered variety.  It was very productive, and the plants got so heavy I had to prop up the canes with guy ropes.

I left some on the plant at the end as this variety produces good dried beans too - a bit like small butter beans.

I am going to grow this variety again this year and would recommend it.

I grew White Lady last year and was very pleased with them. Taste wise, they're the best runner beans I've ever tried. And no matter how big you let them get, there's never any stringiness at all.

I always grew Lady Di which are stringless and have always cropped well for me but this year I shall be growing White Lady (special offer @ T&M).  :)

Last year I grew White Emergo, as I was given them.  Good croppers, but not impressed with the taste and texture and would not bother with them again.  Year before that I grew Enorma, absolutely loved them and planning to grow some more this year.  I am going to give Czar a try this year, depending on which I like most out of Enorma and Czar will determine what I grow in future.

Seed from last year's Scarlet Emporer going in pots today!

Probably sow about 60.

(That's if I survive the long swim across to the greenhouse...)!

I am trying the new self pollinating runner beans Called Firestorm and Moonlight. I will let you know what I think of them later in the season.

I reeally like 'White Lady' as they are heavy croppers as well as having a sweet taste to them and stringless.

Got 'best buy' in Which as well.

I have bought a packet of Polestar seeds.  I was tempted by the fact they they claim to be totally stringless.  As anyone tried these.

Are Enorma stringless? I'd quite like to find a good red flowered variety to grow alongside White Lady.

I tried some of those for the same reason last year but there were some that went stringy.

No runners for me this year either, most of last years (white lady) stayed on the plant and went to waste.

As for white lady being the best, you're all wrong  ::) get your laughing gear around some desiree, much higher yields, stringless and a much better bean flavour.

Thought of you dear, when we popped into our fav garden centre for the best bacon butty around.
Saw some Desiree runner beans and have bought them for a taste test comparison. Will do these in the garden and the others on the plot.

Will be interesting to see which tastes best. Won't be cooking them with lard tho' :D

Try Lady Di - another stringless variety but with red flowers (an RHS AGM variety.)

Pretty good flavour, although I think the Holy Grail of combining stringlessness with all of the old-fashioned runner bean flavour has yet to be discovered.

I've grown White Lady for the last few years, mainly in the hope that white flowers are less attractive to sparrows than red (doesn't work - still have to rig up some sort of netting to put them off!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
