Comfrey feed
« on: May 01, 2012, 06:44 »
Hi All
i am growing comfrey on the plot and i believe after it flowers then i should cut it let it wilt, then place it in a sack with some weight then add to bin and water..

my question is how much should i add to the potato sack? the bin i have is a plastic 20 gallons....

cheers again for advice  :D :D

Stuff in as much as you like --- it is an imprecise science and the liquid you get will smell bad regardless

and of course be great plant food when diluted (I always try to dilute it to a pale brown like very weak tea colour)

Hope that hekps

you get a better NPK ratio with comfrey but i believe the true nutrients will come when its roots go right down to the clay level, thats where the real stuff is retained, as clay holds nutrients much better than loose ground soil due to clay being more alkaline. if you plan to put roots into water as well, best to beat the roots 1st to allow it to soak better in water and extract the goodness.

Normally you would simply cut the leaves of the comfrey and leave it to regrow leaves for another cut later in the year. You would not dig up roots and put them into the water.

Dave - I would not even bother waiting for it to wilt - stuff the sack with leaves and sink it for a month or two. I use old empty chicken pellet tubs. I fill them to the top with leaves, top up with water and put the lid on to keep the smell in. Once done I pour the liquid into an almost full water butt trying to keep the bits in the chicken pellet tub to be composted later. I then just use the butt to water plants- the mix gets stronger as I pour more tubs of comfrey in. It is not a precise science with me.
