How do i get my new girls in the coop
« on: May 01, 2012, 21:18 »
Have added a couple new hen, but the other 2 won't let them in the house at night so they are sleeping in what I call the hospital run, which is inside the main run.
I lost one of my elder girls the other day & now my other eldest sleeps in the coop on her own as she won't let the others in at night.
Have put the 2 new ones in the coop tonight but they came straight out & back to the perch in the hospital run.
I think they have got used to been in there.
I don't supposed it matters but they would be much better in the coop at night with the gales etc we have been having & the coop is a bit big for just one hen  :D

Any ideas on how to get them to stay in there together?
I could shut the pop hole, but I would have to stay up there for a while after, as the eldest really does let them know who's boss.
I keep the pop hole open at night as they are enclosed on slabs at night, so they can come out when they want the morning until I go up about 6.30am to let them out onto the soil if the weather isn't bad.

You could move them into the coop once they are all sleepy.  Bossy hen should be too tired to mind.  Once you have done it a few times they might get brave enough to roost themselves.

I find the lowest of my pecking order is usually the last to go to roost.  A bit of argy bargy ensues but they soon settle down.   ;)

I went back up after I posted & had to put them back in a couple of times.
I closed the pop hole & left it for a about 10 minutes before I opened it again.
I will probably do the same again tonight & like you said ANHBUC.
I got home just after 11pm, but hopefully not so late tonight  :D
I want to get a couple more this weekend, but don't know if I'm pushing my luck with the problem I'm having at the moment.
It will also give me chance to see if I can see what is digging into my food compost as that's starting to do my head in

Make sure you put extra food and drink stations out in case of bullying.  ;)

Ahh food composting, that will attract plenty of varmints.   ::)  Could you compost it in something varmint proof?

Already have extra feed & drinkers out for them.
I'll go up tonight to see where they are roosting & put them in the house like last night I suppose until they get the idea :D
