First attempt at onions.
« on: April 24, 2012, 21:06 »
As title. I tried seed, that didn't bear fruit (or onions). Bought some sets. Planted them out in raised beds a week between rows. They are puting some nice growth on (so I thought) Being an inquisitive type, I moved a bit of soil from around the top of one of the first planted (about 6 to 8" of foliage). Where's the bulb? I can't find it. Scratch away a bit more...........nice healthy looking roots, but not a glimmer of a bulb. Some mush where I would have expected it to be.

Can anyone suggest a new hobby, for it seems the devil's own satanic herd is deffecating on my veggie patch?

That is quite normal.

The energy originally stored in the bulb has been used to make the foilage.

It won't be until much later in the year, (after the longest day), that the bulb will really start to put on weight.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

But there is no trace of the original onion set. I thought that would stay solid, even though not growing in size, not turn to mush. As it stands at present, it looks like I'll get excellent foliage, smashing roots, and nothing to put on my cheese sarnies.

If you've got shoots, you're OK.

They will bulb up later.

The original set will shrink.

Just to add, I plant mine all at once so that you can dig the lot up and dry in the sun all on the same day, and they store really well so no need to worry about successional growing with onions.  Once you've grown them you will be hooked  :)
